How to Measure for Window Treatments: A Simple Guide
Accurate measurements are essential to ensure your window treatments fit perfectly, whether you're choosing blinds, shades, drapes or shutters. This guide will walk you through the steps for measuring your windows for either an inside mount (mounted inside the window frame) or an outside mount (mounted outside the window frame).
Just grab a steel measuring tape, paper, and pencil, and follow these simple steps!
Decide on Your Mounting Style
Inside Mount: This option fits the window covering within the frame, creating a clean, built-in look. Note that inside mounts may have some light gaps at the edges.
Outside Mount: This option installs the window covering outside the frame, allowing you to overlap the covering over the edges to reduce light gaps.
Measuring for an Inside Mount
Measure the Width: Measure the inside width of the window frame at the top, middle, and bottom. Record the narrowest width to ensure the window covering fits without binding.
Measure the Height: Measure the height at three points—left, center, and right—and record the longest height for the best fit.
Check the Depth: Measure the depth of the window casing, as some coverings require a minimum depth for proper installation.
Tip: Inside mounts may let in a little extra light through the sides. Consider using an outside mount, side channels, or layering with additional treatments for more light control.
Measuring for an Outside Mount
Measure the Width: To reduce light leakage, measure the width of the window opening and add at least 2 inches on each side. This will ensure that the window covering completely covers the window opening.
Measure the Height: Measure the desired height, allowing extra space above the window for mounting brackets and below the window to avoid light gaps.
Note: For both mounting styles, measure to the nearest 1/8 inch for accuracy.
Important Reminders
Measure each window individually: Even windows that look the same can have slight differences that affect fit.
Record measurements in width x height format: This is the industry standard, so label each measurement clearly.
Don't make deductions: The manufacturer will adjust for any clearance needs.
Measure twice: This ensures accuracy and helps avoid costly mistakes.
Following these steps will give you accurate measurements for any window covering you choose, making sure they fit perfectly and work as they should. A bit of care in measuring now saves time and effort later!
